Julija Zaharijević’s Symmetry depicts young women at a prom in Belgrade in the 2000s, their clothes recalling the distinctive codes of that era. Among them stands a member of the Swiss Guard, his uniform unchanged since the 16th century and borrowed from Raphael’s frescoes (visually comical, yet protected by the institution it represents). The painting contrasts the image of youth with the persistence of institutional image, leaving the role of the guard ambiguous among the girls.
Behin Roozbeh shows a group of small oil paintings on cotton canvas. They shift between figuration and abstraction, drawing on her interest in how the feminine tropes and stereotypes function within the context of their own creation of meaning. The works show fashionable objects and details whose character instills feelings of both care and fear.
